Celtics Update: Davis to Return, the Schedule, and more

Davis to Return To Celtics Multiple sources are reporting that Glen Davis has agreed to return to the Celtics on a two-year contract. It is believed that the re-signing will become official early next week. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. If I had to guess, given the lack of available money in the NBA, Davis will return for about $3.5 million a season. The news of Davis’s return comes at the end of a bizarre week in which it was reported that Davis was venting his frustration with the Celtics’ front office via Twitter ( follow Sports of Boston on Twitter! ), and that he was supposedly upset that the Celtics had signed Shelden Williams before him. Later in the week, Davis came out and said that the Twitter page was a hoax and that he was nearing a contract to return to the Celtics; the latter appears to be true now. Celtics Sign Shelden Williams Earlier this week the Celtics inked former Duke star Shelden Williams to a one-year deal. While Williams gives the C’s depth up front there isn’t much to get excited about here. Williams has played for three NBA teams in three seasons in the league. Last season he was traded to Minnesota at the trade deadline. With Al Jefferson done for the year, Williams got the chance to play significant minutes as Kevin Love’s backup. Williams responded to increased playing time with inconsistency. Shelden is undersized and not a terrific athlete. Still, his strength and tenacity make him capable of developing into a Leon Powe-type garbage player. I expect this signing to pan out a little like last year’s fearsome duo of Patrick O’Bryant and Mikki Moore. Boston to Open The Season In Cleveland Tuesday the NBA released its schedule for the 2009-2010 season. The Celtics play the first game of the season against the reigning MVP and Shaq-diesel in Cleveland on Oct. 27. I personally can’t wait to see Kendrick Perkins give Shaq hell on the first night of the season. This is the worst

possible scenario for the Cavs to open the season. If Cleveland was opening against Orlando, Shaq could contain Dwight Howard and wouldn’t be expected to put up much in the way of offense against the reigning defensive player of the year. Instead, Shaq’s headed to Boston where it doesn’t look as good defensively if Shaq contains Perk, but it will look a lot worse for him since he won’t be able to produce offensively either. Good luck with “the Shaq era,” Cleveland. The Celtics will get a rematch of Game 7 against Orlando, when the two teams face off in Boston on November 20th. The Celtics and the Magic will also go at it on Christmas Day on ABC. Overall, the Celtics seem to have received a pretty well-balanced schedule that will assist in resting the legs of our veterans. The toughest stretch comes in the middle of February when a five-game west coast road trip that features games with the Lakers, Blazers, Nuggets and Hornets is bookend with games at home against Orlando and Cleveland respectively. Other Celtics News The Celtics released Gabe Pruitt a week ago, leaving a gaping hole in the depth chart behind Rajon Rondo at point guard. Can I get a Chucky Atkins? Anyone? Tyrone Lue, Brevin Knight and Anthony Carter are still available…oh and Stephon Marbury is around too. Lester Hudson is recovering well from the broken finger he received in Summer League play. We’ll see if he brings his A-game in training camp. Reports are saying that Leon Powe’s preferred destination is Cleveland. I would hate to face Leon in the eastern conference finals or semi-finals. Coincidentally, he is exactly what Cleveland needs, and it is scary. The Marquis Daniels watch continues . Danny Ainge has gone on record saying that Daniels will be a Celtic. It is unclear whether it is the Celtics or Daniels that is hell-bent on a sign-and-trade. © Nathan for Sports of Boston , 2009. |Boston Sports| One comment BostonCeltics , Featured .
