Red Sox Talking to Marlins about Manny

July 30, 2008 · Print This Article

According to ESPN.com, the Red Sox are now engaged in serious discussions with the Florida Marlins involving OF Manny Ramirez. Ramirez makes $20 million that season, which is nearly as much as the entire Marlins roster ($22 million). But, Manny would simply be a two-month rental to help the Marlins overtake the Mets and Phillies for a playoff berth in a tight NL East race.

If the Red Sox manufacture a deal with the Marlins, it is likely they

would kick in money to offset Ramirez’s salary, and they would look for three young players in return — perhaps outfielder Jeremy Hermida or outfielder Josh Willingham, plus pitchers.

So now, the Red Sox have at least had discussions with the Mets, Dodgers, Phillies and Marlins about Ramirez, but a deal still remains unlikely.

The trade deadline is Thursday at 4 p.m. EST.
