Sports Redux: Eight Isn’t Enough

Sports Redux: Eight Isn’t Enough

While Celtics owner Steve Pagliuca didn’t get the win he was hoping for yesterday, he can at least take solace in the fact that his day job is going well, as the C’s won their eight straight last night, slamming on the defensive clamps in the 4th quarter to finish off Milwaukee, 98-89. The man of the hour for the C’s was Rajon Rondo, who pinballed his way to 11 points, 13 assists, 9 rebounds, and five steals. All 11 points came in the fourth quarter, as the Rondo who had lulled Milwaukee into forgetting about him came roaring to life, and even hit free throws when the Bucks fouled him in desperation. "Tonight was the first time I saw ‘Hack-a-Rondo’," said Doc Rivers afterwards. The matchup was pretty highly anticipated, as Rondo got his first look at Milwaukee’s rookie sensation Brandon Jennings. Jennings scored 17 on 7-for-19 shooting, and somewhere out there, Dominique Wilkins just nodded appreciatively. Bucks coach Scott Skiles said Rondo definitely won the night: "He took it to our rookie pretty good." Pierce and Perk contributed with 15 apiece, while Kevin Garnett led the team with 25 and rolled right onto Luke Ridnour’s arm for one of those injuries that makes everyone in the room gasp for a second. The C’s now head out for as easy (on paper! on paper!) a

road trip as you’ll ever see. First is Washington, in last place in the Southeast. Then there’s Chicago, who hasn’t got their act together at all and just lost to the Nets. Finally, Memphis, who’s in last place in the Southwest. Sounds good. On paper. They’ll be making the trip without Marquis Daniels, who just had his thumb operated on, but with Tony Allen, who played last night for the first time this season. Bob Ryan’s fired up about the team. The Red Sox haven’t broken any news at the winter meetings, but the Yankees have. Yeah, we should have told you to sit down first. The Yankees, according to numerous sources, are going to get CF Curtis Granderson from Detroit in a three-way deal that will cost the Bombers a couple of thoroughly replaceable relievers and a prospect. Jayson Stark is fired up about the deal. Peter Gammons, America’s favorite baseball reporter, has left ESPN and will be coming home, in a way, joining NESN and doing some work for the MLB Network as well. In other sports media news, Bruce at BSMW got to spend some time interviewing Lesley Visser about Patriots history and what she went through as one of the country’s first significant female sports reporter. Pretty interesting stuff.
