Sports Redux: Two Get Away

AP Photo Boston team’s lost two games on Friday that both could have been won. Each team led early and then fell behind before losing in the end. Philadelphia stopped the Celtics’ 11-game winning streak with a 98-97 decision. Elton Brand led all scorers with 23 points and eight rebounds, and scored the game-winning basket with 7.7 seconds left. After 24:00, Boston had a 53-42 lead over the 76ers, and despite a fairly pedestrian half, we saw something that we had not seen yet this year: Rasheed being Rasheed and getting his first ejection in green. Yes, the basketball sensibilities of the talented Mr. Wallace were offended and he was given the rest of the game off by referee Billy Kennedy. For most of the second half, it seemed like the rest of the Celtics were off, too. A 59-44 lead devolved to a slim 76-72 advantage over Philly after three quarters. With 6:02 left, Elton Brand put the 76ers up 86-84. Boston had an answer in the person of Ray Allen and a three-pointer with 4:12 left to take a 91-89 lead. Allen missed a shot at the buzzer to seal the loss.

Kevin Garnett led Boston with 21 points. The Bruins lost to the Chicago Blackhawks, 5-4, in a shootout. David Krejci scored the first and last goals in regulation for the Bruins. In between those goals, Chicago took three leads and gave them back. Both teams combined on an exciting overtime period that featured no goals. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane scored shootout goals for the win. Patrice Bergeron and Mark Recchi each had two assists. While the current Bruins do their thing, a slew of former Bruins christened the Fenway rink on Friday. The old-time Bruins looked right at home skating around Fenway .
