This Week In Booze: Heavy With Olives

Political commentator, television personality, and classic cocktail enthusiast Rachel Maddow is now utilizing her varied interests to engage in investigative cocktail journalism. She has obtained a grainy spy photo of bartenders (Derek Brown and Adam Bernbach) and bottles (Luxardo maraschino, Old Tom gin, and maybe that’s Dolin Rouge vermouth?). [ MSNBC ] Spoiler alert! Rumor has it that Boston’s own Josey Packard (whom you may recognize from her excellent work at Drink and in LUPEC ) may be on Maddow’s show this very evening, possibly setting punch on fire, as she is wont to do. [ Drinkboston ] This drink is garnished with no fewer than fourteen blue-cheese-stuffed olives, one for each of Tiger Woods’s indiscretions. Bostonist suggests ordering a bowl of olives instead. And perhaps a cheese plate. Those would go nicely with a glass of dry sherry. [ Drinkboston ] And keep your hands to your own

garnishes, please. [ Atlantic ] Pisco sour in marshmallow form? Yes, please. [ A Dash of Bitters ] Sir Arthur Conan Doyle = scotch. Joseph Conrad = old fashioneds. [ Lauren Leto ] Does vodka give you a kinder, gentler hangover? Does it matter, when bourbon is delicious, even in moderation? [ BBC , Art of Drink ] The new Parish Cafe in the South End will open next week, just in time for New Year’s hangover brunching. [ Grub Street , Twitter/seanfrederick ] 2009’s best new cocktail trend: “Authentic Tiki drinks.” Worst: “Bars aping the trappings of craft cocktail bars and speakeasies but forgetting to bring the craft.” (The word “authentic” doesn’t belong anywhere the word “Tiki,” but we won’t argue with anything else in the 2009 Devil’s Dining Awards.)
